Attorney Mercedes S. Cano

My Profile

Since the beginning of her career, Ms. Cano has used her knowledge in law to represent the interests of immigrant clients. In 1999, with funds from the Initiative for Public Interest at Yale University, Ms. Cano formed a not-for-profit organization that helped over 1700 immigrant families. She was published by the New York City Law Review in the collaborative article titled “Public Interest Practice Section Notes from the Field: Challenges of Indigent Criminal Defense.”

Ms. Cano served as the President of the Latino Lawyers Association of Queens County 2012-2014 and is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), the Queens County Bar Association, and The National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

As a staunch advocate for immigrants and their families, Ms. Cano continues working with the community, with a particular focus on family petitions for same-sex couples, after the SCOTUS decision in US. v. Windsor, in which the federal government recognized gay marriage. Ms. Cano can be seen on television in the weekly program Pregunte Sin Miedo, Telemundo Noticias, Channel 47, where she analyzes immigration issues and answers viewer questions.
